How to grow Wax Begonia
The wax Begonia plants are popular ever since British queen Victoria’s regime. There are more than 1800 species of these plants. The modern cultivars have more color choices than the older cultivars. They also can tolerate more hot temperatures.
You can use wax begonias as indoor plants as well as outdoor plants. In warmer climates, they thrive as perennial plants. But in cooler places, you can grow them as annual plants.
These plants go dormant or even die in frosts. However, if you overwinter them indoors and provide adequate warmth, they can thrive flawlessly. In this method, you can extend their blooming season too which is normally during the summer.
The height of a well-matured plant varies between six inches to two feet. They have beautiful glossy, oval-shaped leaves. Some verities have beautiful greyish foliage whereas others have green foliage.
The flowers are usually creamy white, light yellow of mild pink colored. Some varieties have a pleasant fragrance too.
These plants have a fibrous root system. They are mildly resistant to short drought periods. Wax Begonia is less troubled by pests and diseases.
You can grow them as bedding plants in your gardens or mass plant them to fill your empty spaces. The contrasting color combination of flowers and foliage is a treat to watch. They serve well in container gardens and hanging gardens.
